WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNS UMASS DARTMOUTH, 6-3

Boston, Mass. - The Emmanuel College women's tennis team took an early 2-1 lead after doubles play and carried the momentum into singles action to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at the Winsor School courts. The match was the first of the year for the Saints who improve to 1-0 after two rainouts earlier in the week while the loss drops the Corsairs to 1-1 on the year.
Junior Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) played well for the Saints in the #1 singles and doubles slots, teaming up with freshman Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) to notch an 8-4 win in doubles play before prevailing 6-1, 6-1 in singles action. Hadlock also picked up her singles match, defeating senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, Mass.), 6-3, 6-2.
The Corsairs picked up wins out of the #3 and #4 singles spots as sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, Mass.) had one of the most exciting matches of the day, battling back to prevail over Emmanuel College sophomore Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.), 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the third singles match. Sophomore Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, R.I.) registered the win in fourth singles play, defeating junior Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.), 6-4, 7-6 (5). The third UMD win came in #3 doubles action as junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, Mass.) teamed up for a 7-4 win.
Emmanuel took home the #5 and #6 singles matches to secure the win as sophomore Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) battled for a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory out of the fifth slot before freshman Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win in her collegiate debut.
The Saints will return to the courts on Tuesday, September 13 when they play host to Clark University for a 3:30 p.m. match while UMass Dartmouth is idle until Thursday, September 15 when they travel to Newbury College for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
