CORSAIRS EDGE SAINTS, 5-4
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts junior Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, Mass.) came from behind to defeat Emmanuel College sophomore Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Me.) at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 and the host Corsairs edged the visiting Saints, 5-4. The non-conference women’s tennis match was the 2012 home opener for the Corsairs and was played at the UMass Dartmouth athletic complex on Saturday afternoon. With the win, UMass Dartmouth is now 2-0, while Emmanuel drops to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

Emmanuel sophomore Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Amanda Wozniki (Bristol, Conn.) teamed up for the Saints' lone win in doubles competition, handily defeating Nicole Pelletier and Cignoli, 8-1. UMass Dartmouth took the point at No. 2 doubles, when Angela Pollard and Allison Furtado defeated Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) and Jenny Konecnik, 8-1. Corsairs senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, Mass.) overcame a 6-1 deficit to come back and defeat Hewes and Emmanuel sophomore Alex Jennings (Granby, Conn.), 8-6 at third doubles.
Trailing, 2-1, after the doubles action, Hadlock and Konecnik each won their singles matches in the No. 1 and No. 4 slots, respectively. Emmanuel freshman Daniel Tueme (South Easton, Mass.) dropped her 6th singles match, 6-1, 6-1. Reid then put Emmanuel ahead, 4-3, when she defeated junior Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, R.I.), 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, at number three singles. Schulze tied the match at 4-4 when she upended Woznicki at number two, 6-4, 6-4, before Cignoli broke the tie and gave UMD the 5-4 victory.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Newbury College on Thursday. The Saints will visit Clark University on Tuesday evening.
