WILDCATS TAKE TWO ONE-RUN GAMES OVER SOFTBALL

PROVIDENCE, RI – After suffering its first conference loss of the year on Saturday, the Johnson & Wales University softball team got back to its winning ways on Sunday. The Wildcats won a pair of one-run games as they beat Emmanuel, 5-4, in the opener then took the nightcap, 2-1.

Of Note:
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Casey Sheehan hit a two-run homer then one batter later Megan Kieselback hit a solo home run.

Johnson & Wales answered with three runs of its own in the first, including a two-run dinger by senior Emily Gorecki (Bremerton, Wash.).

A pair of JWU errors allowed Emmanuel to recapture the lead, 4-3, in the third. Sydney Rogers – who topped the Saints with three hits – reached on a throwing error then scoring on another throwing error after she went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Heads up base running in the fifth allowed the Wildcats to pull ahead. Meghan Gavin (Wallingford, Conn.) doubled in Alex Fantasia (Framingham, Mass.) with her third hit of the game. After pinch hitter Tiffani Semanchik (Flemington, NJ) reached on an infield hit, she caught the Saints off guard when she went to second, which allowed Gavin to score the winning run.

Caitlin Kiene (South Windsor, Conn.) threw the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up her second save. Emily Gundrum (Bethlehem, Pa.) stayed undefeated at 8-0 as she gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits with four strikeouts.

Susie Kieselback got the scoring started with a solo home run in the top of the second. Kieselback was the only player in game two to pick up a pair of hits.

JWU got runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead. Second baseman Ally Mishol (Longmeadow, Mass.) ripped a double to the gap in left field to bring home Diana Amendolara (Newtown, Pa.) with the eventual winning run.

Pitcher Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, NY) went the distance to improve to 15-2 on the year. She gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts. The Saints' Megan Kieselback only gave up two runs, but was saddled with the loss.

Up Next:
The Wildcats wrap up their regular season home slate on Tuesday when they take on Roger Williams at 4 PM. The Saints host University of Saint Joseph (CT) on Wednesday at Roberto Clemente Field at 6:30 and 8:30 PM.
