THE LEAD – A trio of goals and much of the offensive play on Opening Day helped Saints women's soccer start their season with a 3-0 win on Thursday morning against Fisher College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After controlling the play through much of the first half, the Saints broke through in the 26th minute with sophomore Kaelyn Briscoe (Walpole, Mass.) netting the first goal of the 2022 campaign.
- Briscoe was the benefit of a pinpoint pass out of the midfield by first-year Morgan Fisher (Glen Allen, Va.). The second-year forward found space at the top of the box and fired a shot that squeezed through the grip of Falcons sophomore goalie Olivia Leo (Dunmore, Pa.), giving EC a 1-0 advantage.
- The Saints struck in quick succession early in the second half, stretching their lead to 3-0 after a 65th-minute tally by junior Rory Mahoney (Quincy, Mass.), followed by a 68th-minute goal by senior Aoife Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.).
- Mahoney got in behind the Falcons defensive line after a booming punt from first-year Saints goalie Patricia Kirejczyk (Ansonia, Conn.). On the breakaway, Mahoney slid a shot into the back of the net, giving Emmanuel a two-goal advantage.
- Delaney scored just three minutes later, coming off a corner kick by first-year Liz McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.). The cross from the corner was knocked down in front of goal and found Delaney on the doorstep, who poked in the loose ball, boosting the Saints lead to 3-0.
- Falcons senior forward Naomi Vivas (Mexico City, Mexico) had a pair of chances on the morning, including a quality opportunity from the top of the penalty area in the 31st minute, but Kirejczyk was up to the challenge, making a diving save to keep EC ahead 1-0 at the time.
