May 21, 2012
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its second varsity campaign with a 5-10 overall record and a 2-7 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, earning them their first-ever playoff berth in the GNAC tournament as the No. 8 seed. The Saints would battle No. 1 Norwich University in the GNAC Quarterfinals, falling to the eventual GNAC champions, 14-4.
The squad kicked off the season in dramatic fashion, notching a come-from-behind 13-12 overtime victory over Regis College. Freshman Madison Altwies (Southington, Conn.) led the way with a team-high five goals while freshman middie Alexia Basile (West Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with three goals and an assist in the win.
The Saints first conference victory would come on March 24 on the road when they'd head down to West Hartford, Conn. and down Saint Joseph College (CT), 21-8. Senior Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led the way with five goals and an assist while junior Madeline Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) matched her point total with four goals and two helpers. Basile enjoyed a stellar game in front of her high-school hometown crowd, netting four goals while freshman Shannen Corrigan (Southington, Conn.) and Marykate McNulty (Madison, Conn.) also played well in their home state, depositing three goals apiece in the victory. Sophomore goalie Hillary Dandurant (Merrimac, Mass.) registered ten saves in net to collect the win.
Emmanuel's second conference win also came on the road when they locked in a 15-8 victory over Anna Maria College on March 31. Altwies and McNulty each scored four goals in the win while Basile added three tallies and one assist. Carr led the Saints with five points on two goals and three assists while Dandurant made 12 saves to secure the "W".
The team almost posted back-to-back GNAC wins, barely falling to Saint Joseph's College (ME) 12-11 in double-overtime but bounced right back with a dominating performance on April 5 in an 18-4 win over Wheelock College in non-conference action. Eight Saints found their way into the scoring column including a game-high of five by Carr. Leahy enjoyed the best all-around game with three goals and four assists while freshman defender Megan Mattox (Upton, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate hat trick in the win.
On April 14, the Saints sent off Carr, the program's lone senior, in style by collecting a 17-10 victory over Daniel Webster. Carr fittingly recorded a game-high seven points on six goals and one assist to lead the offense while Altwies added two goals. Leahy also potted a pair to go along with four helpers while sophomore Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) and McNulty each scored two in the win.
In the final game of the regular season, Carr tied her single-game program record when she scored eight goals in a 25-22 loss to Rivier College. Leahy also had a huge game, establishing a new single-game record for points with 10 on six goals and four assists.
Carr finished the year with a program best in goals (39) and 49 total points earning GNAC Second Team All-Conference Honors. Leahy also had a spectacular season with 31 goals and 20 assists for a program-best 51 points. Altwies also netted 31 goals while Basile added 28 tallies. Rounding out the Saints top scorers was McNulty with 22 goals on the year.
Carr was one of the integral members in helping get the Emmanuel women's lacrosse program off the ground last season and enjoyed an impressive two-year varsity career with the Saints. Carr will graduate holding the record for total points (89), goals (74), free position goals (26) and draw controls (92). She'll also graduate ranking second in assists with 15 and third in groundballs with 68. Over the two seasons, Carr played in 22 games starting every contest and incredibly scored in 21 of the 22 matches including multiple-goal outings in 19 games.
The Saints will look to build off their second varsity season in 2013 when they return all but Carr on their roster.
