NEGRI POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE TO LIFT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL IN KEY LARGO CLASSIC
TAVERNIER, Fla. -- Junior forward Lena Negri (Arlington, Va.) posted a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Emmanuel College women's basketball team to a 68-62 victory over Bridgewater State University in the consolation game of the Key Largo Classic held at Coral Shores High School in Tavernier, Florida.
TAVERNIER, Fla. -- Junior forward Lena Negri (Arlington, Va.) posted a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Emmanuel College women's basketball team to a 68-62 victory over Bridgewater State University in the consolation game of the Key Largo Classic held at Coral Shores High School in Tavernier, Florida.
Emmanuel improves to 7-4 with the win, while Bridgewater State slips to 5-5 with the setback.
Elisha Homich paced Bridgewater with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Jenna Williamson added 15 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Tatyana Belizaire registered her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Melissa Daigle chipped in with ten points and a pair of steals.
The Emmanuel bench outscored the Bridgewater reserves by a margin of 27-2. The Saints also held a 55-38 rebounding advantage including a 20-9 edge on the offensive glass.
The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes. Emmanuel took the lead for good on a Jasmine Burwell layup with 13:30 remaining in the second half. Burwell's bucket was part of a 14-2 run which erased a three-point deficit (46-43). The Saints got up by as many as 11 points (65-54) before settling for the 68-62 win.
Williamson moved into a tie for ninth place on Bridgewater State's all-time scoring list as she now has 1,072 points in her career.
The 2014 Key Largo Classic saw two days of extremely competitive games between the four schools participating this year. It culminated with the Keene State University Owls winning the Classic after a tough overtime win over the Austin College Roos, 74-68. The Owls were led by an impressive performance by guard Kelsey Cognetta, whose 26 points help the Owls gain a 36-16 lead at halftime, and aided them in outlasting Austin in overtime.
This tournament saw numerous amazing performances from players on all four teams. Alongside Cognetta, Keene State's Christian Wojtas also performed well with 18 points, including six three pointers. Austin College's Erin Riley scored 18 points to help the Roos come back 20 points down in the championship game to tie it up and send the game into overtime.
