THE LEAD: The Emmanuel men's volleyball suffered their first loss of the season against the Blazers of Elms College on Thursday evening. Despite a game-high 11 kills for EC's Mike Kokoros (Braintree, Mass.), the Blazers took advantage of miscues by the Saints to complete the sweep, 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elms pulled out to a quick 7-4 lead in the first set with kills by Luis Martinez (Bayamon, P.R.), Nik Bates (Hampden, Mass.) and Ben Laxton (Chicopee, Mass.) and held on to at least a three-point lead through the set to finish with a healthy win, 25-15.
- EC was able to take an early lead in the second frame as senior Justyn Schueler (Trumbull, Conn.) and Seamus McDonagh (Long Beach, N.Y) recorded early kills, but the Blazers fired back with a 5 point run and never looked back. Elms continued to take advantage of poor service and attacking errors by the Saints, closing the set 25-16.
- The third set was the most competitive of the evening. A service error by Elms gave EC the momentum early, followed by a kill and service ace by Josh McDonald (Smithtown, N.Y.), 5-3.
- The Blazers shut down the Saints with another five-point run, led by two kills by Carlos Mercado (Barranquitas, P.R.) and one a-piece for Martinez and Laxton, 8-5.
- Elms went on to take a solid five-point lead through the middle of the set, 8-5, and continued to hold on to that lead through the majority of the set. The Saints were able to close the gap late with a deadening kill by Gary Randall (Essex Junction, Vt.), 22-16, but Elms was able to hold on completing the three-set victory, 25-21.
