How It Happened
Emmanuel struck for the initial marker with 12:14 to play in the opening period as junior Ben Hartig-Orr (Reading, Mass.) finished in the nylon from a feed by Matt Katon (East Falmouth, Mass.). The Corsairs ended the period on the right track offensively, as a pair of markers from Jordan Torres (New Bedford, Mass.) and Dean Miller (Ashland, Mass.) gave the host a 3-1 lead. That energy continued in the second period as UMass Dartmouth rattled off three more unanswered goals off the sticks of Sawyer Gibbons (Sandwich, Mass.), Donahue, and Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.) to snag a 5-1 lead with seven minutes left before halftime.
The Saints began to mount a comeback on the scoreboard, starting just before the end of the half as they scored two goals to finish the period on a 2-1 run. The visitor's scoring resumed in the third period as Emmanuel controlled a 3-1 advantage in the period scoring, with the lone Corsair goal in the third coming from Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) as the sophomore picked up his seventh marker of the year in unassisted fashion.
UMass Dartmouth had the game-sealing rush come in the fourth period, starting in the opening minute as Donahue netted his second of the contest. After a goal from Emmanuel's Katon pulled the visitor to within one goal of tying the game, the Corsairs erupted for a trio of goals to finish the game strong. With 9:10 left, Torres deposited his second of the game to get it going, and just 50 seconds later, Miller notched his second of the contest to give the Corsairs the 10-7 lead. Donahue put the final punctuation on the team's victory, taking a feed from Torres and converting the opportunity to complete his hat-trick for the 11-7 final.
Inside the Numbers
- With the three-goal performance, Donahue posted his first collegiate hat-trick and just his second multi-goal outing with the last one coming in his debut on Feb. 25th against Curry (13-12 loss).
- Torres has now collected a marker in the team's first four contests, extending his goal-streak to seven games dating back to April 22nd of last year. He has also recorded back-to-back multi-goal games.
- Prozinski is the only other Corsair to find the net in each of the four games to start the 2017-18 campaign.
- Miller picked up his second multi-goal of the season in the victory and his 22nd of his career. He currently has 67 goals in four seasons with the Corsairs.
- Sophomore Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory between the pipes, stopping seven shots in a complete-game effort.
