BOSTON, Mass. – Head Coach Trevor Craven has announced the captains for the Emmanuel College Men's Lacrosse team. The Saints, who will be competing in the program's seventh varsity season, will be captained by two seniors and one junior for the 2018 slate.
The three captains for the upcoming season are seniors Michael Sousa (Cranston, R.I.) and Charlie Moran (Maitland, Fla.) and junior Adam Crabtree (Warwick, R.I.). This year's captains were elected by votes from their teammates and coaching staff, with additional input from athletic administrators and training staff.
The Saints went 7-10 during the 2017 campaign with a 4-4 mark in Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) play. After bowing out in the GNAC Quarterfinals, the Saints were selected to finish fifth in the 2018 GNAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
All three upperclassmen are making their first appearance in the leadership role and are excited for the year ahead.
"It means a lot to me to be selected as a captain," said Sousa. "Freshman year, neither myself nor my coaches saw me in this position so I'm super thankful to my peers who now see me as a leader both on and off the field. Being a captain of this program is special and I'm blessed to be mentioned with the great group of guys who were my captains."
Moran enters his senior season after his junior campaign was cut short due to injury and is looking forward to getting back out there and making a run at another GNAC championship.
"To get back to another conference championship, we [the captains] are going to have to hold everyone accountable for the effort put forth each and every day until we reach this goal," said Moran.
Crabtree joins the leadership ranks after playing on a defensive line the past two years behind former captains of the program in Pat Heffernan '16, Chris Baglivi '17 and Brendan Gallagher '17. While those teammates shared his position, his biggest influence came from another former captain.
"Sean Reilly '17 had the biggest impact on me as a player," said Crabtree. "He was one of my roommates during sophomore year and definitely showed me what it took to play at the collegiate level, but also how to keep your body ready to play throughout an entire season. Looking at my teammates, all of the upperclassmen my freshman and sophomore year have worked hard to create a blue collar mentality on this team that has brought us to where we are today."
The three will look to lead Emmanuel to the program's fourth GNAC title in five years but recognize that there will be many obstacles and challenges along the way.
"It's going to take hard work and the right mental attitude," said Sousa. "Being physical is half of the game. Having the mental fortitude to withstand the highs and lows of the season is huge. Last season, we didn't reach our goals so it is all about how we respond both mentally and physically to that, this season."
The Saints are slated to play a 17-game schedule and their quest for a fourth GNAC title begins on Saturday, March 3 when they hit the road for Union, N.J. for a non-conference tilt against Kean University at 1:00 PM.
