Emmanuel led for the good majority of the game and the Saints went up by as many as 11 points late in the first half. Saint Joseph's trailed for the first 15 minutes of the second half, before the Monks made their move late in the game.
The contest was played closely in the early going, with the two clubs trading baskets at either end. Senior guard Xavier Everson (Rochester, N.Y.) found classmate Michael Mailhot (Norwich, Conn.) open on the break and he buried a triple to put the Saints up, 18-16 at the nine-minute mark in the first half.
Saint Joseph's point guard Jerome Diggs (Lanham, Md.) and Emmanuel swingman Michael Connor Morgan (Glocester, R.I.) traded threes at each end to set the score at 22-21, Emmanuel. Junior guard D.J. The senior tri-captain drained a trio of three-pointers in less than 90 seconds, giving the hosts a 34-23 advantage with 3:28 left on the clock. This would be the Saints' largest lead of the night.
The Monks, who were playing without starting forward Steve Simonds (Steep Falls, Me.), then went on a 6-0 run of their own, capped with a jumper from junior guard Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.), which brought the spread to 34-29 with two and a half minutes to go.
