April 11, 2009
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams braved the brutal outdoor conditions on Saturday afternoon to compete in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Corsair Classic. Strong winds, finger numbing cold, rain and clouds put a damper on the all-day meet. However, despite the unfortunate temperatures and conditions, the Saints remained tough and resilient, ending their day with several records, personal bests, and improved performances.
Freshman Chris Conway (Norton, Mass.) set a new school record, when he won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.44. His performance also qualified him for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships. Chris is presently ranked third in New England and 10th in ECAC in this event.
Sophomore Ben Cleveland (Auburn, Maine) qualified for the ECAC Championships and set a new school record in the 100 meter dash, running 11.03 in the trials. He placed second in the event overall with a final time of 11.66. Cleveland is the first Emmanuel athlete to qualify for the Division III New England and ECAC Championships in the 100 meter dash. Cleveland is presently ranked fourth in New England for the 100 meter dash and 11th in the 200 meters. Based on ECAC rankings, Cleveland is 10th in the 100 meter dash and 19th in the 200 meters.
Sophomore Andrew Heath (Stanford, Conn.) placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.89. Freshman Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.) placed second in the 5K with a time of 17:02.81. On the field, sophomore Alex Lucier (Northbridge, Mass.) long jumped 19’2”, placing fifth. Freshman Greg Brown (Norton, Mass.) placed fifth in the discus, throwing a distance of 81’11”.
