BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.), sophomore Cameron Anderson (Watertown, Mass.), and freshman Katherine Holmberg (Easton, Mass.) all broke school records in the season-opening meet for the Emmanuel College Outdoor Track & Field team at the Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Chamenko set the record in the men's 5K race, finishing the run in 16:22.89. The previous record of 16:32.01, was set on May 1, 2011 by Stephen Armstrong at the Brown Invitational. Chamenko also holds the Emmanuel record in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Anderson, who set the indoor shot put record in his first meet as a Saint, broke the outdoor shotput record this time around. His throw of 41'1" was more than five feet further than the previous record of 35'9.35", set by Joe Oullett at the Regis Pride Classic on April 28, 2013. Anderson's throw was also good enough to place sixth overall in the event.
Senior Corey Hebert (Acushnet, Mass.) posted a new personal best with his performance in the 800m run, finishing with a time of 2:15.05.
Sophomore Francisco Tavares (Boston, Mass.) ran personal bests in the 100m and 200m dashes, crossing the line at 11.80 and 23.75, respectively.
Fellow sophomore Constantino Politis (Saugus, Mass.) competed in three events, posted personal bests in each. He reached 30'9.25" in the shot put, 87'4" in the discus, and 91'0" in the javelin.
Freshmen Jaxell Negron and Jake Shlaferman (Chicopee, Mass.) both competed in their first meets as Emmanuel athletes, running in both the 100m dash and the 200m dash. Negron posted times of 13.17 and 27.00, while Shlaferman clocked in at 13.44 and 27.81.
Competing in her first collegiate outdoor meet, Holmberg broke a two-year record in the 3000m run with a time of 11:42.24. The previous record was held by her teammate, senior captain Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.), who ran the 3000m in 11:47.76 at the Brown Invitational on April 13, 2013.
Roberts posted a time of 11:46.83 in the same event, which would have broken her old record, if not for the efforts of Holmberg.
Senior Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.) earned a fourth-place finish in the 1500m run, clocking in at 5:08.43, a new career best in the event.
Sophomore Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn.) posted a personal best of 2:49.49 in the 800m run.
Freshman Reilly Boyle (Wells, Maine) also grabbed a top-ten spot, as her 400m time of 64.38 was good for seventh overall in the event.
Boyle was also a part of the 4x400m relay team that finished eighth with a time of 4:24.60. She was joined by Pangonis, Varca, and freshman Jordyn Gonsor (Springfield, Mass.).
Boyle, Gonsor, and fellow freshmen Nicole Assetta, Alicia Barry, Mary Nahorniak, Oscany Rodriguez-DeJesus, Devan Phillips, Angela Brocco, Angelica Czercowy, Carly Jones, Cara Welsh, and Katherine Gilmore all competed in their first outdoor meet for the Saints.
