BOSTON, Mass. - Senior distance runner Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.) and junior thrower Cameron Anderson (Watertown, Mass.) each broke school records in what was a stellar overall day for the Emmanuel College men's and women's indoor track & field teams at the University of Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Pangonis finished fourth in the 800m run with a record time of 2:27.28, good enough to send her to the DIII New England Championship meet. Her time broke a four-year-old record of 2:28.81, set by Julie Young at the Northeastern University Carisella Invitational on December 3, 2011.
Anderson, the transfer student from Assumption College, made his Emmanuel debut by shattering a nine-year-old record in the Shot Put. His throw of 41'3" was good enough for fourth place at the meet and broke Brett Adell's record of 36'7" that was set at the Harvard Invitational on December 9, 2006.
The other group of Saints to qualify for DIII New Englands was the women's 4x200m relay team of senior Zoe Pierce-Dickens (Franklin, Vt.), juniors Mellyn Costello (Canton, Mass.) and Micaela Fraccalossi (Plymouth, Mass.), and sophomore Sara Ciochetti (Watertown, Conn.). The squad posted a time of 1:53.32 to finish third in the event and qualify for the regional meet.
Pierce-Dickens also competed in the 400m event, finishing fourth in 64.03s and was followed across the line by freshman Reilly Boyle (Wells, Maine), who finished fifth with a personal-best time of 64.44s.
Along with Pangonis' school record, three other Saints set personal bests in the 800m run. Senior Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.), 2:50.59, sophomore Jacqueline Mosko (Woburn, Mass.), 2:51.89, and freshman Angela Brocco (Levittown, N.Y.), 2:52.06, all ran the best times of their respective careers in the event.
Freshman Cara Corey (Readfield, Maine) finished the 200m dash in 31.60 seconds, faster than she has at any other meet. She followed that up with a solid performance in the long jump, posting a personal best of 12'6".
Fellow frosh Alicia Barry (Hingham, Mass.) posted a one-mile time of 7:00.14 which is a new personal best for the distance runner.
Freshman Katherine Gilmore (Fairhaven, Mass.) also set a personal record by throwing 20'1.50" in the weight throw.
Freshman Taylor Graboski (Watertown, Conn.) set a new personal best in the 55m dash with time of 8.52, as did sophomore Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn.) in the 600m run. Varca placed third in the meet, crossing the line in 1:45.36.
Aside from Anderson's record-breaking performance, the Saints men's squad had a solid overall day at the track, finishing fourth as a team.
Sophomore Francisco Tavares (Boston, Mass.) turned in the best running performance of the day, as he won the 400m dash with a personal record of 52.63 seconds.
Junior distance runner Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) finished fourth in the mile run with a personal-best performance of 4:37.41. Senior distance runner Corey Hebert (Acushnet, Mass.) also posted a PB when he took fourth place in the 600m run, crossing the line in 1:30.81.
Hebert was outdone in the 600m by fellow senior Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.), who grabbed second place with a time of 1:29.73.
Freshmen Jefferson Zannoni (Merrimack, N.H.), 2:58.24, and Brandon Fitzpatrick (Tewksbury, Mass.), 3:22.64, placed third and fourth respectively in the 1000m run. Fitzpatrick's time was fast enough to set a new personal best.
Freshman Daniel LaChance (Raynham, Mass.) finished the 55m sprint in 8.40 seconds to set a personal best and sophomore Francesco Albanese (Woburn, Mass.) reached a new personal best distance in the weight throw at 23'4.50".
