NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Emmanuel College Saints posted several incredible performances at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at The Armory. Overall, the Saints collected ten All-ECAC honors and set five new Emmanuel records at the Championships.
Junior Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) couldn't have been better on Saturday morning, as he tore up the track in the men's 500 meters. Bruno's time of 1:03.77 earned him 1st place in the event and he crossed the line more than two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, a Hamilton College sophomore, who finished in 1:05.80. Bruno's All-ECAC performance broke his own EC program record. Bruno finished 2nd in this event at the ECACs in 2012 with a time of 1:04.75. He is just the second EC student-athlete to win an ECAC Championship. Emmanuel's Chris Conway won the ECAC 55m hurdles championship back in 2009. Bruno's flawless ECAC 500m performance will conclude the indoor season, as NCAA does not run a 500m race at nationals.
Sophomore Adam Julien (New Orlean,s La.) sprinted to a 7th place in the men's 400 meters. Julien's one-lap time of 49.25 broke his own EC program record in the event. After just missing All-ECAC honors with his 9th place finish (49.80) as a rookie, Julien's top-eight finish earned him All-ECAC honors for 2013.
The Emmanuel men's 4x400 meter relay team placed 4th overall in a new Emmanuel record time of 3:19.93. Finishing behind Cortland State, University of Southern Maine and Coast Guard, the Saints team of Bruno, Julien, Ryan Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.) and Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) earned All-ECAC honors with their top-eight finish.
The Saints 4x800m relay squad also earned All-ECAC honors. The team of Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.), Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.), Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.), Patrick Callan (Pawling, N.Y.) cruised to a 7th place finish in a time of 8:00.29, breaking the program record they set two weeks ago by six and a half seconds.
The Emmanuel men's Distance Medley Relay, featuring Baker, Thomas, Bruno and Ibrahim, raced to a 10th place finish in a time of 10:30.09. As a team, the Emmanuel men scored 19 points to finish in 17th place overall out of 51 competing teams.
The Emmanuel women qualified for the ECACs in the 4x800 meter relay. The Saints team of Molly Metivier (Keene, N.H.), Chloe Egan (Burlington, Vt.), Julie Young (Derry, N.H.) and Meaghan Mauer (South Hadley, Mass.) finished in 9:59.71 for another new program record. The squad cut five seconds off the record time they set just two weeks prior.
This was a historic weekend for the Saints' Track & Field program. The ten All-ECAC performances was Emmanuel's best showing ever at an ECAC Championship, surpassing the previous high of five all-star performances at the outdoor ECACs in 2012.
The Eastern College Athletic Conference has nearly 200 members in Division III alone, making the championships among the largest such meet in the nation. The Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships have been contested, both men's and women's, since the mid-1980s.
