Saints Win 4th Straight GNAC Championship
February 29, 2004 - On Saturday, the Women's Basketball Team defeated Norwich University, 65-63 to win their 4th consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship. In arguably the most exciting GNAC championship game in conference history, the Saints prevailed in a battle featuring 13 lead changes and 11 ties. Junior forward Paulette Johnson led Emmanuel with a double-double (15 points & 11 rebounds). Sophomore forward Alyssa McCoy poured in 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while freshman forward LaTeisha Johnson hit for 12 points and pulled down 9 boards.
With 42 seconds remaining and the game tied at 58, senior captain Chrissy Pagano hit a clutch 3-pointer to give Emmanuel their final lead of the game. On Norwich's next crucial possession, Pagano stole the ball and Alyssa McCoy hit 2 free-throws to seal the win for the Saints.
Chrissy Pagano was named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team and Paulette Johnson was selected the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Emmanuel will now advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Saints' 1st round game will be played on Wednesday (3/3). Their opponent and the site of competition have yet to be determined.
The GNAC Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams have been announced. Congratulations to Emmanuel College juniors Albert Hayle and Bobby Brown. Both were voted GNAC 3rd Team All-Conference members.
The Men's Volleyball Team is currently 10-5 overall and 8-2 in the NECVA-New England Division. The Saints defeated Mount Ida College on Thursday night, 3 games to 1. After losing the first game, 17-30, the Saints came back to take the next 3, 30-27, 30-18, and 30-24. Emmanuel was led by freshman John Bluhm (18 kills, 9 digs, & 2 aces), sophomore Steve Yates (17 kills & 17 digs), and junior Mike Mazur (17 kills, 8 digs, & 4 blocks). Sophomore setter Patrick Bemis had 57 assists and 6 digs in the match. Emmanuel now will begin a stretch of home matches starting this Monday (3/1). The Saints take on M.I.T. on Monday night at 8:00 pm at the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College.
Saints Storm Into Semifinals
February 25, 2004 - The Women's Basketball Team eased past Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night in the GNAC quarterfinals, 65-48. The Saints were led by junior forward Paulette Johnson (18 points & 9 rebounds) and sophomore guard Molly Forbes (14 points, 6 rebounds, & 5 steals). The top-seeded Saints (22-4) will take on 5th seeded Simmons College (18-7) in the tournament semifinals on Friday night (2/27) at 5:30 pm. The second semifinal game of the night will tip off at 8pm and will feature \#2 Norwich University (21-5) vs. \#3 Albertus Magnus College (16-8). The winners of these two games will meet on Saturday (2/28) at 4:00 pm for the GNAC Championship. All GNAC Tournament games will be played at the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College. The winner of the GNAC Championship receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Men's Basketball Team was defeated by Southern Vermont College on Tuesday night in the GNAC quarterfinals, 73-61. Emmanuel was led by junior guard Bobby Brown (13 points & 3 assists), junior guard Keven James (12 points), junior forward Andrew Barry (11 points & 7 rebounds), and junior forward Albert Hayle (10 points & 8 rebounds). The Saints finished the season with a conference record of 8-10 and an overall record of 9-16. Congratulations to Bobby Brown for being named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll for his performances last week.
The Men's Volleyball Team defeated Newbury College on Tuesday night, 3 games to 2. The Saints were led by sophomore Steve Yates (24 kills), freshman John Bluhm (18 kills & 18 digs), and junior Mike Mazur (17 kills & 4 blocks). Emmanuel is now 7-2 in the NECVA-New England and 9-5 overall. The Saints play again on Thursday night (2/26) at Mount Ida College at 6:00 pm. The Men's Volleyball home matches begin next week. The Saints will have their home opener on Monday night (3/1) vs. M.I.T. at 8:00 pm.

Top-Seeded Saints to Host Women's Tourney
February 23, 2004 - The Women's Basketball Team cruised past Saint Joseph College (CT) on Thursday night, 62-47. Emmanuel was led by sophomore guard Molly Forbes (13 points, 6 rebounds, & 4 steals), junior forward Paulette Johnson (12 points & 9 rebounds), and sophomore point guard Evita Esteves (9 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, & 7 steals). This win gave the Saints a perfect regular season conference record (12-0). The Saints went on to defeat St. Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday in their last regular season game, 65-56. Paulette Johnson led the team with her game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Molly Forbes poured in 14 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and added 4 steals, while sophomore forward Alyssa McCoy chipped in with 8 points and 6 rebounds in the win. Congratulations to Alyssa McCoy for being named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll for her performances in the Saints' games last week.
Emmanuel finished the regular season with a conference record of 12-0 and an overall record of 21-4. The Saints will host the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament this week. The winner of the GNAC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Saints face Johnson & Wales University in the tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday night (2/25) at 7:00 pm. Two semifinal games will be played on Friday night (2/27) at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday (2/28) at 4:00 pm. All tournament games will be played at the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College.
The Men's Basketball Team rolled past Daniel Webster College on Saturday, 96-86. The Saints were led by junior guard Bobby Brown. He had 29 points, including 4 three-pointers. Juniors Keven James, Michael Hale, and Albert Hayle each added 12 points in the win. Hayle also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Emmanuel wrapped up the regular season with a conference record of 8-10 and an overall record of 9-16. The Saints will enter the GNAC Tournament seeded 7th and will travel to Bennington, VT to face 2nd seeded Southern Vermont College on Tuesday night (2/24) in the tournament quarterfinals. The winner of this game will advance to the tournament semifinals on Thursday night at the home court of the highest surviving seed.
The Men's Volleyball Team was defeated by national powerhouse Rivier College on Saturday, 3 games to 0. The Saints were led by sophomore Steve Yates (8 kills, 6 digs, & 3 aces), freshman John Bluhm (8 kills & 4 digs), and sophomore Pat Bemis (20 assists, 3 digs, & 2 kills). Emmanuel is currently ranked 3rd in the NECVA-New England, behind Rivier and Endicott. The Saints are 6-2 in the conference and 8-5 overall. Emmanuel plays again on Tuesday night (2/24) at Newbury College at 7:00 pm. This match will be played in the gymnasium of Hellenic College. The first Emmanuel home match is next Monday night (3/1) vs. M.I.T. at 8:00 pm. All Men's Volleyball home matches are played at the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College.
Hoop Teams Edge Suffolk in O.T.
February 17, 2004 - The Men's Basketball Team topped Suffolk University on Saturday in overtime. The Saints led the Rams by 2 points at halftime. The two teams were locked at 77 after the 40 minutes of regulation. The Saints outfought the Rams in the 5-minute overtime to win, 90-87. Junior guard Bobby Brown was the high scorer for Emmanuel with 22 points, including 3 three-pointers. Junior forward Andrew Barry shot 6-11 from the floor and 6-6 from the line, scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 boards. Junior guards Keven James and Jerry Etienne chipped in with 15 and 13 points respectively. The Saints are now 7-9 in the GNAC and 8-14 overall. They play again tonight (2/17) at Mount Ida College at 7:00 pm. The next Emmanuel home game is Thursday night (2/19) vs. Emerson College at 5:00 pm.
The Women's Basketball Team extended their win streak to 10 games on Saturday when they edged Suffolk, 65-56, in overtime. Junior forward Paulette Johnson scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 8 rebounds for the Saints. Freshman forward LaTeisha Johnson registered her 2nd collegiate double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 boards. Sophomore guard Molly Forbes chipped in with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals in the win. The Saints are currently 10-0 in the GNAC and 18-4 overall. They play again tonight (2/17) at home against Daniel Webster College at 8:00 pm.
The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the Tufts University Stampede on Saturday (2/14). This was the final meet of the indoor season. The Saints finished up their indoor season with one new school record and several personal bests. Freshman Nyrie Emslie set a new school record in the 1000m after just missing her own record in the 1500m. Achieving personal bests in their respective events were sophomore Susan Aguiar (1500m), freshman Kari Lynch (1500m), sophomore Jessica Rovero (55m), freshman Holly Vassar (200m), and sophomore Maggie Brice (800m). The men's team also had numerous athletes achieve their personal bests. Freshman Chris Nezivar improved in the shot-put, while freshman Raymonal Jeune ran the third best time by an Emmanuel athlete in the 55m. Other athletes to run their personal bests were sophomore Carlos Lopez (400m), freshman Dan Campagna (200m), and freshman Loxley Walters (200m). For complete results, click here.

Emmanuel was led by freshman John Bluhm (19 kills & 13 digs), junior Mike Mazur (17 kills & 3 blocks), and sophomore Steve Yates (15 kills, 8 digs, & 5 aces). Sophomore setter Patrick Bemis had 58 assists in the match. The Saints play again on Wednesday (2/18) at Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 pm.
Saints Extend Win Streak to Eight;
Esteves Notches Quadruple-Double
February 9, 2004 - The Women's Basketball Team extended their win streak to 8 games last week, defeating Emerson on Tuesday, Johnson & Wales on Thursday, and Western New England on Saturday. In Emmanuel's 73-48 win over JWU, sophomore point guard Evita Esteves recorded the first quadruple-double in school and Great Northeast Athletic Conference history. In 32 minutes, Esteves accumulated 13 steals, dished out 11 assists, grabbed 10 boards, and scored 10 points. Phenomenally, she also had time to block 3 shots in the victory. Esteves' performance marked the first ever quadruple-double by an Emmanuel men's or women's basketball player. Esteves leads the Saints in assists (5.2 per game) and steals (4.5 per game), while she is 4th on the team in scoring (10.1 points per game). On Saturday, the Saints cruised past Western New England, 76-62. Emmanuel was led by junior Paulette Johnson (17 points & 7 rebounds) and sophomore Alyssa McCoy (17 points & 5 rebounds), while Esteves chipped in with 12 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Congratulations to Evita Esteves for being named the GNAC Player of the Week for her performances last week.
The Saints remain undefeated in the conference (8-0) and have an overall record of 16-4. Emmanuel plays again at home on Tuesday night (2/10) vs. COF rival Simmons College at 8pm. This game will be televised on Comcast channel A23 on Sunday, February 15th and Sunday, February 22nd at 10:00 am.

Emmanuel was led by junior Mike Mazur (25 kills, 8 digs, & 6 blocks), sophomore Steve Yates (16 kills, 11 digs, & 3 blocks), and freshman John Bluhm (14 digs, 12 kills, & 7 service aces). Sophomore setter Patrick Bemis had 51 assists in the match. Congratulations to Mike Mazur for being named the NECVA-New England Player of the Week last week after his performances in the Stevens Tech. Invitational Tournament. The Saints are currently 5-0 in the NECVA and 7-3 overall. They play again tonight (2/9) at Wentworth at 7:00 pm.
The Men's Basketball Team recorded a big win over Albertus Magnus College on Thursday night, 83-69. The Saints were led by junior forward Andrew Barry (19 points & 6 rebounds), junior guard Keven James (17 points & 4 assists), and junior forward Albert Hayle (14 points & 3 steals). On Saturday, the Saints fell to Western New England College, 71-50. Hayle and James led Emmanuel with 17 and 10 points respectively. Junior forward Michael Hale grabbed 8 boards for the Saints. Emmanuel is now 6-7 in the GNAC and 7-12 overall. The Saints play on the road Tuesday night (2/10) at Johnson & Wales and Thursday night (2/12) at Southern Vermont. The next Emmanuel home game is this Saturday (2/14) vs. Suffolk at 4:00 pm.
The Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the U.S. Coast Guard Invitational Meet on Saturday. The women's team finished in 5th place overall. The Saints scoring began with captain Betsy Suda's 4th place finish in the 3000m. Sophomore Ashley Nigro and junior Elise Grant finished 4th and 8th respectively in the 55m. Nigro and Grant also came back later in the meet to take the 5th and 6th places in the shot put. Freshman Nyrie Emslie continued her recent record-breaking streak by adding a record in the 1500m to her list. She finished 6th overall followed by junior Shanna Villanueva (8th). Freshman Kari Lynch and sophomore Susan Aguiar ran their personal best in the 1500m as well. Freshman Holly Vassar placed 5th in the 400m and sophomore Jenna Boutilier set a new school record in the 800m with her 8th place finish. Sophomore Erin Money ran her personal best and took 7th in the 55m hurdles.
The men's team finshed 5th overall in the meet. The Saints were led by freshman Dan Campagna, who finished 7th in 55m hurdles and 5th in the long jump. Captain Serghino Rene placed 6th in the 500m, while freshman Carlos Escobar took 8th in the 800m. Freshman Brett Adell broke his own school record in the shot put with his 9.46m throw.

Basketball Teams Roll Past Rivier
February 2, 2004 - The Men's Basketball Team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Rivier College on Saturday, 81-75. This win improved Emmanuel's record to 5-5 in the GNAC and 6-10 overall. The Saints had five players scoring in double-figures. Junior guard Jerry Etienne led Emmanuel with a season-high 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Juniors Bobby Brown and Argenis Mendez hit for 12 points apiece, while Keven James and Albert Hayle had 11 and 10 points respectively. Sophomore center Jairus Oxendine grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for Emmanuel. The Saints play again on Tuesday night (2/3) vs. Emerson College. This game will be played at 8:00 pm at Pine Manor College. The next Emmanuel home game is this Saturday (2/7) vs. Western New England College at 1:00 pm.
The Women's Basketball Team won their 5th straight game on Saturday, when they defeated Rivier College, 88-46. Freshman guard Christine Sampson had her collegiate high with 17 points, including 5 three-pointers. Sophomore forward Molly Forbes chipped in with 13 points and pulled down 6 rebounds for Emmanuel. Sophomore guard Katie Wentworth chipped in with 7 steals and 4 assists for the Saints. Emmanuel is currently 5-0 in the GNAC and 13-4 overall. The Saints play again at home on Tuesday night (2/3) vs. Emerson College at 6:00 pm.
The Men's Volleyball Team upset Endicott College last Monday night, 3-1. The Saints then improved their conference record to 3-0 on Thursday when they defeated Mount Ida College, 3-2. Emmanuel traveled to New Jersey over the weekend and took New Jersey Institute of Technology (Division II) to 5 games before losing, 3-2. The games scores were 29-31, 30-28, 16-30, 30-18, and 7-15. The Saints rebounded from this loss and headed to the Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational Tournament on Saturday night. Emmanuel defeated Lehman College, 3-1, and New Jersey City University, 3-0, to begin the tournament. However, on Sunday the Saints dropped to perennial powerhouse, Stevens Tech, 3-0, and to Mount Saint Vincent, 3-0. Junior captain Mike Mazur hit .900 with 20 kills in the Lehman match and was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Saints are now 3-0 in the NECVA and 5-3 overall. They play again on Tuesday night (2/3) at Elms College at 7:00 pm. Emmanuel will also play at nearby Lasell College on Saturday (2/7) at 1:00 pm.
The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the University of Southern Maine Invitational Meet on Saturday. Junior Serghino Rene placed 4th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.52, while freshman Carlos Escobar finished 7th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07.56. Freshman Dan Campagna placed 8th out of 14 in the men's long jump with his 18'5.05 jump. Sophomore Ashley Nigro finished 7th in the women's 55 meter dash (8.13), while freshman Nyrie Emslie placed 5th in the 600 meter run (2:00.49). Captain Betsy Suda ran 8th in the 3000 meters with a time of 12:02.30. The Indoor Track and Field Teams compete again this Saturday (2/7) at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Invitational Meet.
